Description
Churro Saltine Toffee is a deliciously addictive treat combining the salty crunch of saltine crackers with a rich brown sugar toffee layer, topped with melted white chocolate and a cinnamon-sugar sprinkle for that classic churro flavor.
Ingredients
Scale
For the Cinnamon Sugar
- 1/4 cup Sugar
- 1 tsp Cinnamon
For the Toffee Base
- 40 Saltine Crackers
- 1 cup Salted Butter
- 1 cup Brown Sugar
For the Topping
- 2 cups Ghirardelli White Chocolate Chips
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a 10 x 15-inch baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray it with non-stick spray to prevent sticking.
- Mix Cinnamon Sugar: In a small bowl, whisk together 1/4 cup sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Set this mixture aside to sprinkle on top later.
- Arrange Crackers: Lay 40 saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, ensuring they cover the entire surface without overlapping.
- Cook Toffee Mixture: In a saucepan, combine 1 cup salted butter and 1 cup brown sugar. Stir frequently over medium heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, continue to stir constantly for 5 minutes to cook the toffee properly.
- Pour Toffee over Crackers: Immediately pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the arranged saltine crackers on the baking sheet. Use a spatula or the back of a spoon to spread it gently so all crackers are coated.
- Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 5 minutes. This step helps the toffee set and soak into the crackers slightly.
- Adjust Crackers: Remove from the oven and let the pan sit for a minute or two until the crackers settle. Use a butter knife to nudge any crackers that overlapped back into place to keep the layer even.
- Add White Chocolate: Immediately sprinkle 2 cups of Ghirardelli white chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee layer. Let them sit for a few minutes until melted.
- Spread Chocolate: Once the white chocolate chips have melted, use a spatula to spread the chocolate smoothly over the toffee layer.
- Sprinkle Cinnamon Sugar: Evenly sprinkle the reserved cinnamon sugar mixture over the melted white chocolate to add that signature churro flavor.
- Cut and Serve: Allow the toffee to cool completely and set before cutting or breaking it into pieces. Serve and enjoy this sweet and crunchy churro-inspired treat.
Notes
- Use salted butter for the perfect balance of sweetness and saltiness in the toffee.
- If white chocolate chips do not melt fully, you can briefly place the baking sheet back in the warm oven for 30 seconds.
- Store the toffee in an airtight container at room temperature to keep it crisp.
- For a dairy-free option, substitute butter and white chocolate chips with vegan alternatives.
- Be careful when handling hot toffee mixture as it can cause burns.
