Description

Enjoy a comforting, homemade Copycat Cracker Barrel Chicken and Dumplings recipe featuring tender chicken simmered with aromatic celery and onion in a flavorful broth, topped with soft, fluffy homemade dumplings cooked to perfection. This hearty dish is perfect for cozy family dinners and brings the nostalgic taste of the beloved restaurant classic right to your kitchen.

Ingredients

Scale

Broth and Chicken

  • 6 cups chicken broth
  • 2 ribs of celery, broken in half
  • 1/2 medium onion (kept in chunks)
  • 1 lb boneless skinless chicken breasts, each breast cut in half

Dumplings

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tbsp baking powder
  • 1 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup + 2 Tbsp milk

Seasoning

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Cook the chicken: In a stockpot or Dutch oven, combine chicken broth, celery ribs, onion chunks, and chicken breasts. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to a simmer and partially cover. Cook for about 15 minutes until the chicken is fully cooked through.
  2. Prepare the dumpling dough: While the chicken cooks, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium mixing bowl. Stir in the milk just until the ingredients come together into a shaggy dough without overmixing.
  3. Roll and cut the dumplings: Lightly flour a clean surface and turn the dough out onto it. Roll the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness. Using a pizza cutter, cut the dough into strips or squares approximately 1 to 2 inches in size.
  4. Remove chicken and strain broth: Once the chicken is cooked through, transfer it to a cutting board. Remove and discard the celery pieces and onion chunks from the pot.
  5. Cook the dumplings: Add the cut dough strips directly into the simmering broth. Let them simmer for 20 to 30 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking and allow the dumplings to cook fully while the broth thickens into a gravy-like consistency.
  6. Shred and return chicken: While dumplings cook, shred or chop the cooked chicken breasts and add them back to the pot. Stir to combine and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Serve: Once dumplings are tender and broth has thickened, serve the chicken and dumplings warm for a comforting meal.

Notes

  • If using pre-cooked chicken (like rotisserie), simmer onion, celery, and dumplings together directly in the broth. Remove onion and celery before adding pulled chicken in the last 5 minutes of simmering to warm through.
  • For thicker dumplings, you can reduce the broth slightly before adding the dough.
  • Feel free to add fresh herbs such as thyme or parsley for extra flavor.
