Description

Miso Salmon is a flavorful and easy-to-make Japanese-inspired dish featuring tender salmon fillets marinated in a savory miso mixture, then baked to perfection and garnished with sesame seeds and green onions. This recipe marries the umami-rich character of white miso with the subtle sweetness of mirin and sake, delivering a perfect balance of flavors ideal for a healthy and elegant meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Salmon

  • 4 salmon fillets, 6-ounce each

Marinade

  • 1/4 cup white miso
  • 2 tablespoons mirin
  • 2 tablespoons sake
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

Garnish

  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds (black or white)
  • 2 tablespoons thinly sliced green onions

Instructions

  1. Prepare the marinade: In a bowl, whisk together the white miso, mirin, sake, soy sauce, and sesame oil until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  2. Marinate the salmon: Place the salmon fillets in a bowl or container and pour the miso marinade over them. Turn the fillets so each piece is thoroughly coated. Cover and refrigerate for 30 to 60 minutes to allow flavors to penetrate the fish.
  3. Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit (220 degrees Celsius) and allow it to heat fully.
  4. Prepare the baking sheet: Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray it lightly with cooking spray to ensure easy cleanup. Remove the salmon from the marinade, letting excess drip off, and place the fillets skin-side down on the foil.
  5. Bake the salmon: Bake the salmon for 10 to 12 minutes or until the flesh is opaque and flakes easily with a fork. Optionally, you can broil the fillets for the last minute to add a slight char, but keep a close eye to prevent the miso from burning due to its sugar content.
  6. Garnish and serve: Once cooked, sprinkle sesame seeds and thinly sliced green onions over the salmon. Serve hot alongside rice or noodles for a complete meal.

Notes

  • If you only have red miso available, reduce the amount to 2 tablespoons as it has a stronger flavor compared to white miso.
  • Be cautious when broiling, as the sugars in miso can burn quickly.
  • This dish pairs well with steamed rice or soba noodles to complement the savory flavors.
