Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients
- 1 cup steel-cut oats
- 4 cups water
- ¼ tsp sea salt, unrefined
- 4 Medjool dates, pitted and chopped small
Suggested Toppings
- 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tbsp pure maple syrup
- ½ cup raw pecans, chopped
Instructions
- Heat Water: Simmer the 4 cups of water in a saucepan over medium heat until it reaches a gentle boil.
- Add Oats: Stir in the steel-cut oats, reduce the heat to medium-low to maintain a gentle simmer, and cook for 20 minutes while stirring occasionally to prevent sticking, until the oats become very thick.
- Add Flavors: Stir in the sea salt, chopped dates, and ground cinnamon. Continue to simmer for about 10 more minutes, stirring occasionally and adjusting heat as needed to avoid scorching, until nearly all the liquid is absorbed and the oats are creamy and tender.
- Rest the Oats: Remove the saucepan from heat and stir the oatmeal once more to combine everything well. Let it rest for 5 minutes to thicken further and allow flavors to meld.
- Serve: Portion the oatmeal into bowls and garnish with maple syrup and chopped raw pecans or your favorite toppings before serving.
Notes
- You can substitute maple syrup with any other sweetener of your choice.
- Dates can be swapped for raisins, dried cranberries, or other dried fruits.
- Feel free to use different nuts such as chopped walnuts or almonds instead of pecans.
- Store leftovers in airtight containers once cooled completely before refrigerating. Add crunchy toppings and syrup just before serving to preserve texture.
