Description

This Southern Meatloaf recipe combines ground beef with diced onion, bell pepper, and a flavorful blend of seasonings, topped with a sweet and tangy homemade glaze. Baked to perfection in a loaf pan, it’s a comforting classic that’s both easy to prepare and delicious.

Ingredients

Scale

Meatloaf

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1/2 cup diced white onion
  • 1/2 cup diced green bell pepper
  • 2 Tablespoons whole milk
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 Tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup panko breadcrumbs

Meatloaf Glaze

  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon mustard powder

Instructions

  1. Prepare Oven and Pan: Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Line a 9-inch loaf pan with foil and lightly spray it with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix Meatloaf Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, diced onion, diced green bell pepper, whole milk, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, eggs, and panko breadcrumbs. It’s easiest to mix these ingredients thoroughly using your hands to ensure even distribution.
  3. Shape Meatloaf: Scoop the meatloaf mixture into the prepared loaf pan. Press the mixture evenly into the pan to form a uniform loaf shape.
  4. Make the Glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together the ketchup, brown sugar, and mustard powder until smooth. Spread half of this glaze evenly over the top of the meatloaf.
  5. Bake: Place the meatloaf in the preheated oven and bake for 1 hour. The meatloaf should feel firm to the touch and pull away slightly from the edges of the pan when done.
  6. Apply Remaining Glaze: Remove the meatloaf from the oven and spread the remaining glaze over the top evenly.
  7. Serve: Use the edges of the foil to carefully pull the meatloaf out of the pan. Slice it into portions and serve warm. Enjoy your classic Southern Meatloaf!

Notes

  • If you do not have a loaf pan, you can bake the meatloaf on a foil-lined baking tray by shaping the mixture into a log about 8 inches long and 3 inches thick. Bake as directed.
  • Red, yellow, or orange bell peppers can be used instead of green bell peppers for a slightly different flavor and color.
