Description

This Easy Ground Turkey Cabbage Skillet is a one-pan, wholesome meal combining lean ground turkey, nutritious cabbage, and savory tomato sauce. Perfect for a quick, healthy dinner that’s better than boring diet food, it’s packed with flavor, easy to prepare, and topped with melted mozzarella and fresh parsley for a delicious finish.

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients

  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 2 lbs cabbage, coarsely chopped
  • 1 cup homemade tomato sauce or your favorite tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup vegetable broth
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Fresh parsley, for garnishing

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil: In a cast iron skillet over medium heat, add 1 tablespoon of olive oil and allow it to warm up before adding other ingredients.
  2. Sauté the onion: Add the chopped onion to the skillet and cook until golden brown, stirring occasionally to ensure even cooking.
  3. Cook the ground turkey: Add 1 pound of ground turkey to the skillet, breaking it into small pieces. Cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally until fully browned.
  4. Add the cabbage: Stir in 2 pounds of coarsely chopped cabbage. Cook for about 5 minutes, stirring well to combine the vegetables and turkey.
  5. Incorporate tomato sauce and broth: Pour in 1 cup of tomato sauce and ½ cup of vegetable broth. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Mix all the ingredients thoroughly.
  6. Simmer the mixture: Allow the skillet contents to cook for 7 minutes so the flavors meld and the cabbage softens further.
  7. Add frozen peas: Stir in 1 cup of frozen peas and cook for an additional 2 minutes to heat through.
  8. Melt the cheese: Sprinkle ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese on top. Cover the skillet to melt the cheese, which should take about 1 to 2 minutes.
  9. Serve: Remove the skillet from heat and garnish with fresh parsley. Serve warm immediately.

Notes

  • It’s fine to use a large non-stick skillet if you do not have a cast-iron skillet.
  • If possible, use low sodium broth and salt to taste.
  • Feel free to use any type of cabbage such as green or purple.
  • To store: Store the turkey and cabbage skillet in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
  • To reheat: Reheat the leftovers in the microwave until hot.
