Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients
- 1 (12 oz) box uncooked penne pasta
- 1 (24 oz) jar marinara sauce
- 3 cups water (or beef broth for more flavor)
- 1 (1 lb) bag frozen meatballs (about 24 meatballs)
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- ½ teaspoon onion powder (optional)
- 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Fresh parsley, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
- Combine ingredients: In the prepared baking dish, stir together the uncooked penne pasta, marinara sauce, water or beef broth, frozen meatballs, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix until everything is well combined and the pasta is fully submerged in the liquid.
- Cover and bake: Tightly cover the dish with aluminum foil to retain moisture. Bake in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the pasta is tender and the meatballs are heated through.
- Add cheese topping: Carefully remove the foil, then evenly sprinkle the shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheese over the top of the casserole.
- Bake uncovered: Return the uncovered dish to the oven and bake for an additional 10 to 15 minutes until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden brown.
- Rest and garnish: Remove the casserole from the oven and let it rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley if desired to add a fresh, vibrant touch.
Notes
- You can use beef broth instead of water to add extra depth of flavor.
- Frozen meatballs eliminate the need for precooking and make this meal quick and easy.
- Feel free to customize the seasoning by adding red pepper flakes for a bit of heat.
- The casserole can be prepared ahead of time and refrigerated, then baked when ready to serve.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
